Well we finally did it. We were able to take a photo of Neptune from the earth with a telescope using Adaptive optics which was a better photo than one taken with the Hubble telescope. It is a great accomplishment; however, it took a far bigger telescope than the Hubble to do it. Which points to the fact a telescope in space can accomplish much more when you compare the light gathering ability of both. All I am saying is if we had two telescopes of the same size, the one in space would beat out the one on earth for clarity, even if the one on earth was using optics which allowed it to get clear viewing through the atmosphere. There are new 3D printers coming, and they will make it much easier to use these printers to build structures on other planets. One of the things which has made it hard to use 3D printers on other worlds is the fact it is extremely hard for them to use native materials, because they couldn’t muster enough force to blow the material out of the jets. This is changing, a new discovery allows scientists at Harvard to blast out droplets from a printer at over 100 times the force of earth’s gravity. This means thick material will be no problem for these printers, making them more suitable for off world construction work than our current crop of 3D printers. There will probably be other tasks discovered for these kinds of printers also.
We have been improving thrust technology for our spacecraft. There is one type of thruster in particular which is being constantly improved and it is the Hall Thruster. The Hall Thruster uses electric and magnetic fields of ionized gases which are then expelled to produce thrust. While they are not powerful enough to lift a spacecraft off the earth, in space they are more than adequate. The thruster has previously been used on satellites, allowing them to maneuver while in orbit. These engines allow for a constant increase in speed, and the latest Hall thruster has doubled the amount of thrust as the previous one. The system also allows the vehicle with the Hall Thruster to carry more than eight times the amount of fuel, which would be available on a chemical rocket system. This system is capable of taking humans to Mars in 40 days and if it continues to be improved it could take even less time. The further away your target is, the more time you save up to a point. The reason for this is the longer the trip the more time there is for the thruster to build speed.
When we think of finding water on planets, one of the last planets in our solar system we would expect to find it on is Jupiter. Jupiter is the biggest planet and is considered a gas giant, and yet NASA has discovered water in the famous great red spot on Jupiter, which is a storm which has been raging for hundreds of years. It turned out the clouds in the great red spot were not as thick as thought, and this allowed scientists to be able to do ground observations. The results were shocking. Jupiter is considered one of the most inhospitable places in our solar system, and if life exists there it might mean life could exist anywhere.
Scientists have discovered a galaxy which does not behave the way ours does. The galaxy is very far from the earth, being 12.4 billion light years away. What is so strange about it, is it is producing stars at a record pace. They are being pumped out a thousand times faster than the Milky Way creates them. The name of the galaxy is Cosmos-AzTEC-1. It is known as an extreme starburst galaxy. It is believed it could be the predecessor to galaxies like our own. One has to remember what scientists are seeing already happened 12.4 billion years ago, because that is how long it took the light to reach us, so the galaxy could in reality be completely different today, and maybe not even there anymore. Another thing which surprised scientists was instead of the usual dense cloud of star making material, there were a couple of blobs of material. Scientists are saying in another one hundred million years this galaxy will be gone.
The Arecibo Observatory is still the single largest radio telescope in the world, but the Chinese are building a bigger one. To make the Arecibo Observatory more sensitive, a new supersensitive antenna is going to be installed. This is making alien hunters very happy. We could use more powerful ways of studying space for signals. If we are talking about races with advanced technology, then they are probably communicating with some method we know nothing about, because they would need something much faster than a radio wave to keep in contact with their craft.
2135 is a big year for earth. Probably no one alive today will be around by then, but an asteroid is projected to have a very good chance of hitting us. The name of the asteroid is Bennu. We certainly don’t want this rock to hit us. If it did, the impact would release about 80,000 times the energy of the bomb we dropped on Hiroshima. NASA is sending a probe to the asteroid to bring back material so we know what we are up against. The material should arrive back on earth in 2023. The probe is named Osiris-Rex. Osiris-Rex is currently drifting toward the asteroid and surveying its surface. The probe was launched in 2016. The method for obtaining the material is a blast of nitrogen gas on the surface, to allow the probe to gather dust and pebbles. Let’s hope this works, and the probe is able to bring back its precious cargo.
Astronomers have announced they have found proof the Milky Way, the galaxy we live in, had previously died and somehow was reborn again. They claim in the first life stars formed differently than they do now, and a dormant period came after that when nothing was formed. This is said to account for two different types of stars. One type is rich in a-elements like oxygen, magnesium and silicon, and the second type in iron. This just goes to show you how little we know about our universe. We just keep finding out new facts.
