Looking For Other Life
There are quite a few people interested in finding out if we are alone in the universe or not. Thousands of scientists and engineers have joined the search and today there are many different projects going on to find out and they range from government projects to more modest private ones. I can understand this mainly because we are a very curious race and some corporate types believe finding an advanced race might be just the ticket to huge profits because of the advanced technology they might find. This of course assumes several things. It is assuming if we do find aliens exist they will be reachable. Space is very big and even if we did find signs of alien existence which might be more advanced than us we may not have a way of ever reaching them, or even communicating with them.
Another problem is our telescopes are time machines. What I mean by that is we are seeing things through them which happened in the past because it takes light time to reach them. If a planet is ten light years away it would take us ten light years for the light to reach us. Ten light years is a huge distance but we might be able to span it someday but that would be way in the future. What if the world we found was 100, 10,000 or millions of light years away could we ever reach it? Maybe not, and at that point it would do us no good to discover those aliens except, for increasing our knowledge. All our hope would be pinned on the fact those aliens had the technology to reach us.
Would hoping aliens could reach the earth be a good thing? The act of hoping is okay, but aliens being able to come here may not be. According to Hollywood, aliens seem to only have one agenda and this is to destroy us and take over our planet because it is so nice and full of resources. This could be a joke on the aliens if climate change continues, but who knows maybe the earth getting hotter would suit some aliens better. How many of you remember the science fiction movie where aliens are secretly terraforming the earth and causing the temperature to rise to make it more habitable for them and deadly for us? I believe the movie was titled “The Arrival”. We know what Hollywood thinks but what do scientists think? Stephen Hawking was perhaps the most famous physicist on the planet. He was very clear on how he felt about us contacting or trying to contact extraterrestrials, he thought it was a bad idea and compared it to when the Europeans met Indian tribes in North America and wiped many of their people out. Some of it was from violence but some of it was also from disease. The Indians had never been exposed to some of the diseases the Europeans had, so they had no immunity. The same thing could happen to us if we met with extraterrestrials. It could happen to them too since our human bodies are factories for bacteria, but I presume if they were very advanced they would be defended against this in some way.
Are we really to think an alien race would want our planet and travel all the way here to get it? There must be plenty of other nice planets in the galaxy and no doubt some of them would have to be closer. According to what has been said over the years there could be another reason for coming to the earth, as a matter of fact there could be several. One reason might be our genetic material. There are many stories about aliens creating hybrids using our genetic material with another. Many people claim to have not only seen these hybrids but also were forced to have sexual relations with them which later produced hybrid children. Another reason aliens might be coming here is because life in the universe is relatively rare and when they find intelligent life they want to study it. There are plenty of stories of aliens being on the planet thousands of years ago and there are also some strange carvings and text which seem to substantiate this, if we listen to some of the more famous UFO investigators. Maybe aliens are attracted to our world for some other reason like our recent advancement in weapons. Could it be they have seen other civilizations who invented nuclear weapons move on to weapons created from singularities such as black holes and have had to destroy those races for their protection and they are watching us to see if we develop these weapons.
It could be we are just a zoo or a history lesson to aliens and this is why so many strange cylindrical ships have been seen which have transparent windows along their sides and where faces have been seen looking out. They look like some sort of cruise ship. These types of spaceships have been reported for years but no where as often as the traditional type of UFO shape which is a circle. Let’s hope that some alien race doesn’t discover us which thinks we are a delicacy like in the famous Twilight Zone Story “To Serve Man.”
Why are we so fixated on letting other exoplanetary races know we are here? This is probably a human weakness. This is the reason we explored our own world and spread ourselves throughout it. We were intrigued with new lands and new people and we have never lost the urge to do this so now the next frontier had to be space because there isn’t much more spreading out we can do on our own planet. Its not that there isn’t room but we need open land for raising animals and farming and much of the land on earth is not fit for human habitation and some of it takes a special talent for survival to exist on. This means we will want to find new earths. There is nothing like this in our solar system although there are some places we could exist on with special equipment and surroundings. One planet which is far to hot to go to and which has another side which is far too cold to live on is Mercury. It is the closest planet to the sun, but even Mercury is said to have a zone between the hot side and cold side which might have reasonable temperatures.
What will happen if we find out we are not alone in the universe? That is when we have to hope there are peaceful aliens out there who just want to get along with us. The question is will they find us too warlike for their taste? Perhaps we are at a stage they were at once and they will understand and try and push us in the right direction or maybe they will put our planet in some sort of an exile and forbid others from visiting us. On the other hand, maybe some warlike race will like what they see and want us to join them in their conquests. This is not a nice thought. Then there is the chance they will just get rid of us because we are not worth the trouble. In other words, we are taking a chance trying to contact alien races and have to decide if the chance to contact one is worth the risk.
