I have always been interested in odd things and if I can acquire something very odd I will try and get if, but unfortunately I have to do this on a shoestring. Recently I noticed a rock up for auction. No one was bidding on it so I decided it looked strange enough for me to bid $5.00 on. I got it for that price. Some would say I was crazy and could go to a park and pick up a rock for free, but this rock caught my eye, it seemed to be more than just a rock. I contacted the seller who was an elderly woman and she told me she believed the rock had been used by Native Americans in some of their ceremonies and it could be old. She seemed to think if you turned it certain ways it looked like faces and other things had been carved on it. I couldn’t tell that much since I only saw it in photos, but the rock seemed very interesting. You will notice in the photos above one could conceive it looked like an animal from a certain angle. The first photo does look like some kind of animal head, perhaps a skeletal one. It sort of reminds me of a dog, horse or some other type of animal with a long face. The surface on the side seems to have been chipped out to form this feature. The seam running down the width of what looks like a head to me makes it look like a mouth. At this point I should give you the dimensions of the rock. It is approximately 3 inches wide when viewed in the position of the first photo and about 1 Β½ inches high. When I looked at one side of the rock I couldn’t help but feel I was looking at some distorted statue of a person with one arm at their side and another with their hand covering their face. I know ancient people carved some very unusual figures and I have a couple, but again was this just what my brain wanted me to see? It almost looked like a human figure coming out of half an egg shell. The next photo which was taken from the top and back resembles a duck head or something similar. This really got me thinking, because of the amount of figures I found on the rock.
One of the first things I discovered about the rock was it had a blue paint chip on it. It was small, but it was there. This made me think it must have been painted at one time and most of the paint had worn off. There were also a few threads on the rock but I attributed this to the packing material the rock came in. Finding the paint chip got me excited and made me wonder how long people had been using this rock in services.
