Things I like
I like the Echo. In case there is anyone out there who doesn’t know what it is, it is a sort of assistant which can carry out different commands which you enter with your voice. I have the Echo Show on my desk next to my computer. The Echo Show has a screen which allows you to do many different things, such as see the words for songs you ask it to play, get the spelling of words and so many other things. There are some people who will never get one after hearing it listens to what you are saying and makes a record of it. This seems to only happen if it thinks you said the start word. Most people use Alexa as the start word, but it can be any of four different words. I prefer Echo. The list of voice recordings can be erased if it bothers you, but you can’t erase everything because the company does what all the other companies do with their assistants, they use the data to improve the way they work.
A couple of weeks ago I decided I was tired of my eye glasses slipping down which made me constantly have to push them back. I went onto Amazon and looked for a solution. It turned out there were many including what looked like a sticky paste you put on your nose. This was not for me; I wasn’t that desperate. Then I saw something which was cheap and decided to try it. The product looked like a washer and you slid one over each leg of your glasses. When you put them in the correct position they sat just behind your ear and stopped the glasses from sliding most of the time. While not perfect, they were quite an improvement and for about seven dollars I got a whole box of them in all different colors.
I have to admit I am very happy with my computer which I had custom built. It is very fast and uses a 16 core AMD chip which is liquid cooled. It allows me to copy very large files in a short period of time which I use on a daily basis. Some of these files took me over an hour to copy previously, but with this computer they can be copied in just a few minutes. This allows me to back up my entire website in that time. The devise uses a solid state internal drive for fast loading and several external large capacity hard drives along with a powerful graphics card.
One of my favorite things is my car. It is not a luxury car, but I still love it. It is a 2018 Hyundai Sonata Limited Turbo. It is loaded with some incredible features such as smart cruse control which will maintain the space with the car in front and even stop if it stops and then start again within 5 seconds. It has blind spot alert, lane control, heated and cooled leather seats, plenty of power for me, emergency braking, rear camera, 8 inch navigation system, traffic alert, blue link, sun roof and plenty of other features. It may not be a luxury car but it has everything I want.
My cell phone is incredible when you consider what I paid for it. It is a Motorola G5+. It is an Android phone and I know a lot of people would turn their nose up at it, because it is not a $1200 Apple phone. I experienced this the other day when someone saw my phone and were impressed by its sleek metal case, but when they found out it wasn’t an Apple they just said “oh.” The phone is a quad core with 32 gigs of memory and a place for a memory card and only cost $229. As I said the case is really nice and the cameras, both front and back take great photos. A 64 gig version is still less than $300. The phone has been picked as best in class and if one can get over the fact it isn’t an Apple, they would be very happy with it. You could buy 5 of these and still not pay $1200. The phone battery lasts me all day and has never run out of juice.
I like hot dogs, not any hot dogs, but particular hot dogs. I like the loose Boar’s Head, Sabrett, Nathans and Hebrew National. Of the four brands loose Boar’s Head is my favorite with the others a close second. When I make a hot dog, I want it to be crunchy. I love that snap when you bite into it. I also like Bubba Burgers. There are several different types and they are all good, but my favorite are the ones with Sweet Onions. They are not cheap, but taste really good.
One of the things I really like is my Swiss Army knife. I don’t know how many times in my life I needed a tool and it was right in my pocket. Before I retired, every time there was a party at work someone would ask me to open a wine bottle with the cork screw. The knife has two blades, one small and one normal. It contains a cork screw, scissors, saw, bottle opener, Phillips screw driver, flat screwdriver, toothpick, tweezers, hook, reamer and can opener. I remember when I had to cut a piece of wood which had a diameter of about ½ inch and all I had was my knife. The saw cut it perfectly.
I like Facebook. A lot of people are throwing digs Facebook’s way lately and maybe they have a point and maybe not. I don’t go on there for controversy, but find it a nice place to keep in contact with friends. Before social media, people would retire and never see or talk to the people they had made friends with at work. Thanks to sites like Facebook you can still stay in contact. I imagine a lot of lonely people who cannot get out of their homes are very glad Facebook and other social media sites exist.
I like sneakers. I haven’t worn shoes since I retired except for funerals. The way they make them today some of them look like shoes. I find New Balance is the best for me. One of the major reasons besides being comfortable is the fact they always fit correctly so they are easy to buy through the internet. They are very consistent.
I will finish by saying we might as well do things we like and eat things we like and even own things we like if we can afford them. We only go around once, or do we?
